Hi all,,,
I have a few engines all stock. all good runners. a 173. 186. 202, and black 3.3 I have a GM 4spd. GM 5spd. trimatic. and a powerglide

What combo would you guys use in a HR to make a cheap runner that is mot too gutless, drivability and economy without too much power loss is the aim

I assume a 173 is cheapest to run, but would a 202/3.3 work less to do the same thing. making that cheaper. Any thoughts... thanks

black 3.3 and gm 5sp would work the best (as used in the VK 5sp) assuming that the 173 is a red motor. and even so, a 173 would be extremely gutless in an HR

Hi, you said cheap runner... so i would go the 186...its a reliable little unit and will still drive surprisingly well....i have one in my HT Prem auto and it cruised along quite well on gas... :)10 litres gas per 100 klm !
I have been told 202s are not

i hardly think you can call the engine that holden used for 15 years as their main 6 cylinder unreliable, whoever told you that is foolish. Especially when you are comparing them to the 186, a motor that got phased out after 4 years.

I would go 186 more reliable. The 202 always had a tendency to stuff number 5 cylinder from memory.

Which ever you choose prob the carb that will determin the fuel economy.
Maybe the 186carb on the 202??

I would go 202. More torque.

AFAIK the reliability myth between 186 and 202 is just that - a myth. Probably made up by Ford owners! Although I understand there was an issue in early 202 production that was rectified pretty quick.

well I guess the idea is apart from the 173 I could use any of the other three motors and the 5spd and not see too much difference.... is that right, what would you use Byron...

Not quite - I'd use a V8. But for a Holden 6 always a 202, especially with an overdrive. I'd use a 186S inlet/exhaust setup and HEI dizzy. But the stock 202 inlet/carb is OK, but better with extractors. Definitely use the HEI dizzy off a blue or EFI black

A bit more mucking around....but sell what your've got a put the Nissan 3 litre in with 4 spd auto.........more power, last twice as long and cheap as chips....

I always thought the 202 was a stroked 186,,? could be wrong?? i was wrong once before? long time ago though?

Im already doing an RB30 into the wifes HR wagon... I was hoping to just get another one on the road to use and sell so I could get some more money to finish her car.

same bore, different stroke. 186 is 3inch, 202 is 3.25. 202 mains are 300thou bigger than 186.

the problem with early 202s i think was with the pistons i had one let go on number 3 but it could have been any piston they had a gap above the little end that used to weaken them over time decent pistons there ok gutless but reliable cheers
