looking at buying a 253 engine # QR411*** I dont have access to the motor yet so i dont have the cast #.
I`m thinking HX-HZ by the prefix and numbers , any more acurate guess`s ?

I could be wrong but i thought all 253s after 1971 started with QR high comp and QS low comp QT was 308, im not sure about the numbers after that im pretty sure HQ was the last of the pre pollution motors.

the QR was used until part way through HZ then became zr, By the build number and look of the motor I`m guessing early emission model , I have a HQ 253 which is QR250*** and is a 72 block and a HX 4.2 which I now checked and was QR790***and a 76 block so

There were nearly 500,000 HQs built therefore it will be a HQ block with the QR4... number, each engine was numbered sequentially irrespective of the size or type.

yeah zr for the hz and the went to v for the early commodores not what you wanna know though. was emmision controls introduced into HQ's or after?

ADR 27A was introduced with the HX, that is why the HJ is more like the HQ mechanically and didnt run for very long.

QR411xxx is approx July-August 1973 HQ. Anything but Statesman.
