Have to agree with you on gearboxes and diffs except for the HQ 350 (TH400 or Muncie) or the HK-HT 1837 if it was ordered with a 12-bolt. The Muncie and 12-bolt are at least as strong as a toploader and 9", but no Holden was ever made with both. The HK/T

Byron, the big block MUNCIE you mention above, is that the same as what's sometimes referred to as a ROCKCRUSHER muncie,I've always wondered how good they really were?

From what I remember the "rockcrusher" was an early Muncie with less angle on the gears making it very noisy. The HQ Muncie was the big block version that used a TH400 output shaft and fine spline input shaft. The output shaft is huge compared to a normal

OK. Wasn't 100% sure of the splines. I knew it was less than 28, and the Holden banjo and small Salisbury was 23. So that could make the "baby" Borg Warner slightly stronger than a Holden fine spline banjo and baby 10-bolt.

Fair call. The HQ SS is not rare by any means though (2800 made). HQ 350 coupes and sedans are fairly rare. A9X's and the Bathurst XU-1's are quite rare too. The only Holden muscle cars that do get hard to identify are the early HQ LS coupes and the Batur

Absinth makes a good point,it's never sat well with me that you could get a SL/R torana with a poxy six,it sought of dillutes the SL/R 5000.It's the same with SS's,you could get them with boat anchor 253's.
