Hey guys ive got a pretty worked 308 with a high energy sump, i was wandering what psi the oil should run at at idle and during driving, also i was told the high energy sumps for the WB they are ment to hold 6.5 litres but with only 6 litres in the sump the oil is well over the full mark on the dipstick any ideas?

I know they often run very low psi at idle, I had a HZ 308 that the oil light flashed on and off in summer and a WB Statesman that ran near the bottom of the gauge at idle, both were very good low milage motors. Both were running Penrite HPR30.

Hi BAD-WB
My HQ manual says:
@ 500 rpm - 7 psi minimum @ 2000 rpm - 40 - 60 psi
The dash light comes on between 3 - 5 psi
hope this helps,
John

My 308 Doesnt go below 40 psi and jumps to 60 when I accelerate, up to 80 if I really put my foot down.

10 PSI for every 1000 rpm. Hence, you really on need HV when you run over 6500 rpm.

Too high pressure?. SHorten life of bearings + Significant HP loss involved in driving oil pump.

So what causes the oil pressure being too high and how do you fix it?

tight bearing clearances, HV oil pumps when not required for application, and grade of oil, and oil temperature.. Too High oil press not usually a problem, more a consideration for the engine blueprinter.

The clearances do have and effect on oil pressure.
"Loose is Fast" is a common phrase in drag racing circles.

Dr Terry, how do you release a stuck relief valve or reduce the tension? Also how do you check if it really is a stuck relief valve causing the high oil pressure?
Cheers

You will have to take it out and measure the overall length of the valve, and then measure its total length under 5lb pressure, or whatever the nominated length given for the engine specification.

. . . . . and before you go that far, check that your gauge is accurate. "Always start with the easy things" my dad always says.
