Has anyone imported a vehicle to Australia? I'm currently trying to bring my project car over from NZ and having trouble dealing with customs. They are trying to charge me GST for the value of MY vehicle + GST for the cost of the freight. GST for the freight i can understand, but I'm a bit upset about paying GST for a car that i have owned for 10 years. Customs want to take 5 grand off me for GST! can anyone offer suggestions? I've looked at bringing it in as parts but its too difficult to split up to meet those catagory requirements.

Go to the Australian Taxation (ATO) web site and do some research. Also try calling them.

Thanks for all the responses. Yes it is incomplete and the insured value of the car is $50000. its extensively modified and i have spent way more than this. The resale value of this vehicle is no where near the $50000 mark but because of the insured value

Id say the insured price could be a problem if it went missing if the insurance company was to look at there market value. Over insured. I could spend 20000 on a mini but it doesnt put the value up by 20k.
Id reasess your value and pay tax accordinly.?
