hey fellas, ive just turned 18 and just started my apprenticeship for my mechanic, my nan has a 1970HG monaro, and has owned it since 1970 when it was released, shes the 1 time owner, well ive got it now, and im about to start restoring it, on the most part, im restoring to to full original specs, we still have the original hub cap wheels to. Anyhoo

Im about to take the motor out to do a full reno, its a 308 version not the 350

Now when rebuilding, im wanting to to a "few" internal mods to it, im getting the heads ported and polished and the intake valley ported and polished as well.

Now, im wondering what is some stuff i can do to the internal of the 308 motor to get a little more power? Ive heard of getting it stroked, but i have also heard stroker kits are quite $$$$, what am i lookin at for a stroker kit?

While im rebuilding the motor, i will be stripping the body and it will get sent of to get resprayed in its original indigo orange paint scheme.

Also the transmissin will get serviced and rebuilt as there is a vibration at high revs.

Il be rebuilding the driveshafts, new wheel bearings etc. The interior has just had 7K worth of new material in the original white/black checker material. All chrome re dipped, also i will be in need of window seals as the rigy didge ones have dried out over 37 years and cracked etc. Also some of the chrome trim on the windows etc has rusted out a bit so il also be lookin for the little windows in the front of the doors as well

Anyhow, heres some pics of it, i really love this car, my main ambition is to get this baby restored back to full original, as its to nice a car to bling and over do. I just want that little extra oomph from the motor

Hope some of u fellas can help me out, as im guessing u are all alot more experienced than me when it comes to this HEHE

Im also into Nitro RC as well, ie the trucks on the bonnet LOL

Hi Scottywilkes

Nice car, should be fantastic when it is finished. I am not a mechanic at all but if you look at any of the car magazines, ie Street Machine etc. you will see adds for stroker kits from a number of suppliers they are mostly around $100

hey skydog, thanks for that, i was told that stroker kits for the 308s ranged into the 5k mark, i dont want to get a really cheap quality one, as i want it to last. Also i heard that the block has to be modified slighly for the rods to clear it with some

done plenty of that LOL, dont worry, it will still continue to happen

The reason for the rebuild

The rear panels under the rear window seals has rust under the paint, i am lead to believe that this is because when manufactured they installed a piece

basically if i leave it, it will become harder and harder to start, and rust away to nothing. So as u can see, i cant really let it go unnoticed

Hi scottywilkes.

If you're restoring this car to original, go with the ported heads & maybe even a stroker, but don't stray from the factory stock camshaft.

I've seen many cars restored as you've described & everyone one of the owners has regretted

Hi scottywilkes.

IMHO the best system for a V8 resto is to use the factory exhaust manifolds, then a factory look-a-like dual system, but with a more open muffler, plus a balance pipe to eliminate the bark & drone usually associated with dual systems.

Scotty

My 2cents worth:

Rebuild the motor as original, using smallest oversizes necessary. Rebuild the heads with hardened exhaust seats (for ULP), standard size valves, new valve springs. Dont polish the heads, leave them as is but clean them up in
