hi all,

trying to set up cam and crank as per manual instructions. ie. set number one at tdc on compression stroke, and place chain on sprockets so that there is 9 links between dots on oil pump side.

I've found that at tdc the crank is in perfect position as per manual but cam shaft sprocket appears to be 180deg out. However when at tdc on exhaust stroke dots and links are in perfect position.

I've heard before that this is a normal problem, and all you need to do is put one at tdc, place cam sprocket on so that there is 9 links between dots when the chain is put on. Then turn 180deg so that one is on it's compression stroke before placing the dizzy in at ones firing position.

Can someone tell me if this is the way to go. Or is there a more correct way?

Hi Simon

At a guess I would say your crank is 180 degs out not the cam shaft. You will see that you have what looks like TDC twice.

Take off the chain. rotate the crank 180. put the cam at the correct spot, add teh chain and spockets etc and see if

I dont how you are going but I doing the same thing right now myself, just waiting on money for the heads. The cam goes in Sunday sometime. I only recently did the welch plugs and got carried away,

Simon,

Since i am doing this myself. I just checked my 253.

To start rotate the crank in the block a few times see what cylinders come up and down, and u will see that when the #1 is up, the dot on the cranks sprocket must be in the correct spot. It

i thought it was 7 links between the cam and crank dots at tdc thats of the top of m head ive dont 3 now tell me if im wrong
Havent you learnt anything from that guy that gives sermons at church?...Captain whats his name.

DONT PANIC. One link lines up with each dot. So thats 2 links. There are 7 links in between.

Yeah the chain i bought didnt have the 2 timing links in it for some reasson so i just counted the inbetweens. I had a 1972 SS chev

OK just found an OOPS on my 253,,,thank goodness I didnt put the manifold on before doing the rockers !! This I did not see in the paperwork that came with the cam.

When you replace a cam, make sure that the oil journals line up. Meaning make sure the
