there is no difference. They are just different aspects of the supply. 3phase supplys are needed for large current using devices such as aircon and heavy duty welders. Thats why they cant be plugged into a normal power point thats rated at 10amps.

Hi Guys.
To explain that more fully.
The power lines in your street each supply a single phase of 240V AC (above earth). These lines are phased 120º apart (3 x 120º =360º). Some houses get 1 or 2 phases individually, to run their lights & appliances |
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

There is a huge difference. 3 phase is far more efficient and provides a more constant power transfer. A 3 phase motor will put out the same power as a much larger single-phase motor. Edited by user Thursday, 13 December 2007 3:56:22 AM(UTC)

Here is some more info for you:
There are several reasons why three-phase power is superior to singlephase power.
1. The horsepower rating of three-phase motors and the KVA (kilo-voltamp)rating of three-phase transformers is about 150% greater than

Its more simple than any of that. 415V 3-phase is just 3 x single phase 240V supplies that are 120 electrical degrees apart from each other in their waveform and sharing a common star-point (otherwise known as neutral).
So if your house is fed with 3 p |

Lets not forget the SWER system whilst we are at it, only kiding we shall not go there.
The other advantage is the availability of two voltages, allowing loads to be connected in either star or delta.
The efficiency of the motor is also a good point

Those smaller VS drives Warren is referring to are a good way to get yourself a 240V 3 phase supply if you only have a 240V single phase supply eg in the country where you have only single phase distribution transformers. Excellent if you have a hoist tha |
