Hi all, I have recently replaced my manual steering box with a power steering set up from an HZ. Around town its great but on the open road it is very light, almost too light. I also have about 1 inch free play in the wheel. I would be interested to hear from others who have this power steering set up and their thoughts and comments on how their car drives. Can the steering effort weight be increased say be putting larger tyres on the front? Lowering pressure in the tyres etc?
Cheers.

Hi trentm.
If you have 1" freeplay in the box & its too light, the valve needs an overhaul. Get an exchange box.
Once youve replaced the box & eliminated any other play, the best way to improve road feel is to adjust the wheel alignment to add more castor. Around 3 to 4 degrees gives a good feel.

DrTerry, TrentM never mentioned what he's drivin. If its a HQ or similar, the steering geometry would be different to that of a HZ. HZ has the RTS kit. That may be part of it too.
What car Terry M ?
Cheers John

I read many years ago that an HQ had 2lbs of steering effort and an HZ had 8lbs the article didnt state how they changed it but probably the rts with new geometry and some changes to the valving. cheers Leroy |

Hi Guys.
There are several different valves fitted to these boxes, HZs are heavier than HX & so on, but tyre choice & wheel alignment will have more effect on road feel. I know RTS cars use different alignment settings than non-RTS cars, but adding cas |

I know RTS cars use different alignment settings than non-RTS cars, but adding castor to any car will increase steering effort & road feel.
All of this assumes, there are no other problems with the front end & you have the correct steering arms on your HX. An HX GTS should have the shorter arms which are the ones used for power steering conversions, but most HXs with manual steering will have the longer arms which will make the steering too light & ruin the geometry. Check that the arms are the correct length.

Thanks Dr Terry I will look into that. By the way are there rebuild kits available for the steering boxes as opposed to the popwer steering pumps? If so would it be worthwile putting a kit through it?
cheers, Trent.

Hi Trent.
Overhauling a Bendix-Bishop power steering box is beyond the skills of the normal mechanic, let alone a DYI person.
Many parts are now no longer available & many special tools are required for both the dismantling & reassembly.

You are better off simply getting an exchange unit. If you are in Sydney, give me a ring. 9644-2888.

The power steering box was a variable ratio box where the ratio in the straight ahead position was different to that nearer the lock postion. The manual steering box was made in 2 different ratios 16:1 & 20:1.

Dr Terry, I got quoted $450 for a recond box fitted with a 12 mth warranty. Is that reasonable or can someone do better? Im in Adelaide. I reckon Ill do the box in Feb next year. My car had manual 20:1 ratio manual steering before I converted it to power steering and I dare say that it probably has the long arms. How can you tell by visual inspection whether they are in fact long arms and not the short ones?
Regards, Trent. |

Hi guys,
sorry to resurrect an ancient post!
I have recently bought a wb statesman but it has loads of play in the steering in the straight ahead position. (it is a power steer box too).
I have adjusted the lash on top of the box quite a bit using the old wobble the steering wheel back and forth a bit and let go and keep tightening the lash until it only keeps wobbling back and forth a few times. THis has helped a lot but theres still a lot of play and im unsure as to how to do the next adjustment with the big locknut on the end of the box. Does anyone know how to do this? do I need any special tools? Cheers
