Hi I have a VN 3.8 (1989). I've just replaced head and intake gaskets and plugs oil etc... It's been running sweet for about 1500 kms including two 350km trips. When I went to drive to work yesterday it started fine then stalled one block down the road (just lost all power putting foot on gas did nothing). I came back in the afternoon and it started up fine and drove 2 or 3 km in it. This morning it got me about 1.5km from cold then lost all power (not as in no lights on dash) while I was going at about 60kph. and wont start again. It seems very close to starting and even closer once I let it cool down a bit more. It has had no chance to overheat in the distance I've travelled in it.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? I've looked around all the wires and earths on motor and they are all secure and clean. I've check the leads and coilpack connections and they seem good. It isnt losing any cylinders, its all at once. And It doesnt appear to be pressurising the water. Could it be a bad fuel filter or something restricing the amount of petrol getting to engine?

Its been sitting for about an hour, so I'm going to go see if I can get it to go again because its on the side of the road with all my tools in boot. I'll take a can of ether with me because it might help me find out if it is a fuel problem

Any help would be very much appreciated

It will be the crank angle sensor, its behind the harmonic balancer. This is a common fault with the V6 and fails just as you have described. Not expensive to fix.
