I have an 85 XF with a 4.1 carburettored motor. It has an annoying intermittant problem. It can be started with no problems (hot or cold) and will happily idle. If started from cold it can be driven through stop start traffic with no problem. If I stop the engine when it is warm and restart it the engine will stall when I put it in drive. If I use a bit of accelerator I can get it moving but it will continue to stall every time I stop until I get up to around 40-50km/h then it is OK. Any thoughts?

I had it in to the mechanic who though a tune would solve the problem. Replaced plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor. No change though so not a plug problem. Thanks anyway Sparkzy. Every tip helps.
Also noticed before and after tune that it is smokey

I would check your timing, and auto choke to make sure it's turning off properly. Both these things can effect idling once the car is warm and/or make your car run rich.

mine was doing something similar......found it today... idle stop solenoid open circuit.

it will run under choke as the main jets will be active.

also check that the dual idle jet arrangement is functioning.
