a mate of mine owns a HQ ute. the old red 253 died so he and his dad fitted the complete blue 253 from a VH commodore. it seems to be a good motor. but it didnt come with a coil. So they called me today to ask me why its missing all the time. so had a look and they have used the old points coil. so they bought the right coil and its still missing. i also think they wired up the new coil the same way as the old points coil should be. which i understand has a voltage drop not to fry the points. So how do we get around this to give the coil 12 volts with out hotwiring it. any help will be great... Mikey

OK we have a HQ ute, now with a VH 253 onboard. Fine. if you have a coil suitable for HQ wiring, just wire it up like a HQ.

HOWEVER ! Are the weights in the dizzy the same for the VH as the HQ ? Bet they arent.

Also, how GOOD is the NEW motor ? New

I had the same problem in a HJ. I fixed it by using a relay for the coil. You just use the old coil wire to activate the relay.I mounted it on the firewall and ran a power wire from the battery along with the original wiring. Looked neat and worked a trea

I would still check everything that was mentioned earlier though so you don't waste time wiring in a relay for nothing

Just run a wire straight from the right pin on the ignition switch to the coil, and disconnect the factory resistance wire. Its easy to get to the ignition switch by undoing the 3 bolts that hold the column up and let it drop down to the seat. The ignitio

I think it's the pink one. Check at the coil +ve terminal by removing them and whichever one has voltage while the ignition is on is the resistance wire (the other only has voltage whilst cranking).
