T stands for HT ie model and R stands for right hand drive...
253 and 308 were both options on the HT monaro.... best way to tell might be diff ratio... 3.08 for 253 or 3.36 for 308...

HT 837 was available with 253, 308 or 307. Driveline combos will be: Early: 253 4spd or 307 powerglide. Late:253 or 308, auto or manual.
307/308 will have 10/12 bolt hump. 4spd or Powerglide will have the firewall "centre" speedo cable hole. 253 w |

Also check if the diff is Banjo or Salisbury 10 bolt (with hump on front of tank). If Banjo then 253 otherwise 308 (late HT) or 307 (early HT). My HT was an early built monaro, with 307, powerglide and 10 Bolt 3.36 diff.
