take the 253 out of my HQ ute, remove the torque converter, fit it to a manual 308 in place of its clutch and flywheel, fit the 308 engine to the trimatic and drive off on my merry way without having to have the converter balanced for the 308?

all parts seem to be in good serviceable condition

Yes. But you leave the torque converter on the trimatic and separate the trimatic from the 253. Then remove the clutch and flywheel from the 308 and bolt the 253's flex plate to the 308 using the 253's bolts. Then just bolt it together.

BUT - 308 MUST

ummm, do i need to remove the spigot bearing before i install the converter ? (havent removed the clutch and flywheel for a looksie yet)

Not really. The best way to remove these is to use an old 3 or 4spd input shaft and pack the cavity behind the bush with grease. Then drive the input shaft into the bush - the grease will force the bush out. Youll have to top the grease up a few times to

a cleaner way is to a loxin or similar bolt and fit it with a large washer screw it up tight and lever it out with a crowbar

i have a brass male treaded rod which self taps its way into the spigot with the tread.
Get 5 turns into and simply pull out.
30 sec job.

A1 Bogan.
