Maybe someone on this list can help me. I have a Jaguar XJ-S (V-12 with Getrag box) and I am looking at replacing the engine, I’m not sure whether to go with the 5.0L Commodore engine or the 5.7L Chev LT1.
And then I'm not sure whether to stick with the Getrag, or should I be considering using a Commodore gearbox (or other).
I have a stock diff (2.88) which goes ok with the V12 and the Getrag. The V12 goes well, but it doesn’t fill me with confidence, and I'm moving to a small country town at the end of the year. I would love to be able to just drive the car into the local garage and say "Service it like a Statesman mate".
Any advice or warnings would be appreciated.
I’m looking at getting the conversion done by JagDaim in Melbourne (I am in Brisbane), the Chev and Commodore engines were the options they gave me. Any advice on good combinations for engines/boxes/diffs would be appreciated. The guys indicated they chip the Commodore engines, and I can expect 220KW from the 5.0L and about 270KW from the Chev. Sound about right? For the record, the V12 gives about 200KW.
I love the manual box in the Jag, and the hard work has been done converting it over to manual, but if the T700 auto is vastly superior to the Jag stock tran (T400) I might be tempted to revert to auto. But nah, probably not,, the manual is too much fun.

I knew of one back in the late 80`s which ran a carbied 350 chev with T400 it went very well, the t400 is used in a few model cars and they are a very strong box some say better than a T700. I don`t know of a manual one.

TH400 is a far superior box to a TH700, just a 3 speed. TH400 were standard in V12 Jags. I'd use the Holden engine but stroke it to 350 or 377 cubes.

there were many SBCs that found their way into the Jag engine bay, so it shouldnt be a problem to find information on it. just search for it in google.

Thanks for the input.
Interesting youd say the TH400 is better than the TH700, Id heard that elsewhere too. Dont think Ill go back to the TH400 though, once youve gone from auto to manual in these cars you realise how much fun they can be to drive.

The last of the 308/350 Holden engines had 6 speeds in HSVs, in Holdens it was a Getrag 5 speed. If youve got the funds id buy a complete HSV 5.7, or make it yourself out of a VT or late VSIII sequential 5L engine with a COME stroker kit and HSV memcal (m |

The ultimate 5 speed gearbox would be a Doug Nash, but who can afford one?

Hundreds of Jags end up with Chevs in them. Its the only way to make them get up and go.
I recently bought a XJ6 with a 400 Chev and TH350. Took the motor/trans and diff out. Sold the diff to the hot rod boys. Cut the car in half and took it to the
