Hi All,
I recently bought an LX torana hatch. She's a wicked machine but I have problems with intermittent vibration at certain speeds.

The vibration is only noticible >100km/h and especially when you put your foot down to overtake. Symptoms are heavy vibration coming mostly through the gear shift. She has an M21 gearbox off a 308.

People have suggested I get the tailshaft balanced, but I don't think it can be that, because pressing and resetting the clutch can sometimes reduce the vibration (but not quite get rid of it completely) as if something doesn't always get seated/balanced properly when the clutch engages.

A mate suggested it could be a worn pilot bush in the clutch or an out of balance clutch or flywheel?

I work mate said this forum would be the place to ask before I start trying to pull anything apart. I'd really appreciate any suggestions on how to narrow down the source of the vibration.
Cheers,
Dave

I had the same problem on an LX Hatch once. One of the rear wheels wasn't round. Jack it up and hold a piece of chalk close to the tyre on both sides of the tread and rotate the wheel by hand. You'll see pretty quickly if a wheel is bent.
Apart from that

Check your universal joints and get the tyres balanced.
