Hi all, In what may well be my last anon. post I would like to ask about the 173 red motor. I know bore/stroke, is the cylinder head the same as other red heads?

Where can I buy bits such as pistons/rods?

Were they a "good" engine?

Cheers and thanks

There are basically 2 x red cylinder heads, and 2 x blue heads, with some minor variations along the way as pollution equipment appeared. The main difference is one has a closed chamber for the high comp engine and one is a 202/3.3 head for the low comp v

Thanks Byron.

Is there any truth to a 173 and 186 block sharing castings? Could the 173 be bored to 186 spec if this is the case?

Thanks

I doubt it. That is a 185 thou overbore. They are not the same casting. If you want a 186 just buy a block. They are still pretty cheap, but in my opinion an inferior engine to a 202 especially one with a blue/black crank in it. Usage dependant of course.

Website is awaiting an update. It's a Nasco replacement motor for a late LC GTR. May never have existed, but could have.

And Byron, while you are at the comnputer, what might I pay for a 173s in reasonable condition or suitable for a rebuild?

Possibly my question is largely academic because I think there may no longer be any 173s come up for sale. The people who have the

I actually have one sitting here, hence my interest. It is not something required for any resto job, I would actually prefer a 202 in standard bore config.

I should clarify my 173 is probably an unspectacular version of said engine. I did not notice the little "s" in davids's post.

Sorry for any confusion or undue excitement this may have caused.

Hi Phill,

You did get me a bit excited for a moment. I must start using upper case S.

The 173S motor has an engine number starting CF. I suspect the NF motor Byron mentioned is the Holden replacement 173S motor.

Im not in a position to pay $1000

I used to think holden reds were a dime a dozen...until you need one and you have chucked them all out. No doubt you can still come across cheap ones...but its not an every day occurance anymore and I sort of disagree about your list...whilst those ones a

I forgot about the HL. I still see red 6's going in the bin every time I'm at a wreckers, normally 173 or 202 though. Same for blue and black VL and VK prefixed engines. Of course any Holden 6 is worth money to someone who wants it. If say a bare basic 17
