hi just pulled down an old 253 red motor number QR987444 anyone know what year it is from?
also the pistons have no markings on top slight dome top only the letter F moulded on one side the bearing shells have 001 stamped on them and also HOLDEN 5RB R500
is this a stendard bore motor or 10thou oversize? any help appreciated

Probably early HZ, cast date is in front of passenger side cyl head eg 10F8.
F is for "Front", unless stamped they should be std bore (3.625"). Dome top is to boost compression in later 253s.

If its 8H5 (8th August 1975) its from HX but that number is too high. Are you sure its not 8H8?

Deas standard HZ 253. Lots of original Holden engines i've pulled apart over the years have had 1 thou undersize bearings ie 001.

0.0001" undersize. Nothing more. Common on standard engines.

001 on the crank bearing means that it is .001" of an inch smaller in its bore than std, the journal has been linished at some point because of wear, so therefore the bearing needs to be thicker to compensate. Its like the bore and piston but opposite.

1 of my old hotrod books mentions that chevrolet routinely mixed and matched mains
