gday, i read on a forum that my recently bought speco electric water temp gauge can read off the water temp sender that was used for the original temp gauge. This is only possible with a resisitor, so i bought a number of resistors and and hooked them up when my engine was running temperature. The speco gauge read 90 degrees with the correct resistor, but the needle kept jumping, like the current from the sender was surging or something. Does anyone know how to overcome this or what this problem is?

Hi Natmeisterus.

It should say somewhere in the instructions that came with the gauge, what sender resistance is required.

If you post what car you have, as well as the gauge info I can tell you what you need to know.

Hi Dr Terry, thanks very much for your reply.
The gauge is a Speco 2" 40-120deg Electric water temp gauge, the part number on the front of the box is 524-30.
The engine is a holden blue 253 in a HZ premier, the sender was out of the original 2 barrel st

My suggestion is that you contact the manafacturer/seller direct.Usually they have the knowledege, interest and experience to assist you.Try Bob Forrest at Speco.

I dont know what the resistance values are for the Speco sender, but I doubt that adding a resistor to your existing sender will operate the Speco gauge.

What are you trying to do, why dont you just use the Speco sender in the facto

Mate i had the same problem with the some guages. I ended up being the engine hadnt beed earthed to the body. A small earth strap fixed it. Try it with a jumper lead. Hope this helps you

my original temp gauge is still connected and using the original sender, so i guess its going to be either one or the other. I'd still like to know why the reading kept jumping, would that be a problem with the earth?
