Can you tell from and engine number if it came out of an SS or not?
The number is VU617356 its suppose to be out of a VS commy.

Its way too low a number sequence for a VS engine - its more like VN/VQ/VP era.
You cant tell if its an SS - and it doesnt matter anyway, as they are identical to the standard 5L, so nothing special.

Thanks for that, it was claimed by castlemain wreckers to have been a VS V8 possably out of an SS, at the time of sale when my daughter boyfriend bought it. Would the casting numbers help at all?

Casting numbers would help to identify the year. Im guessing 1991/1992 approximately (Id have to go to my other PC to confirm it with my lists).
All regular VU prefix EFI 5L are the same - 165kw, and 168kw in VS2.
The Exec, SS, Berlina, Calais etc al |
