I have a vp efi 304 v8. which i am putting in a hx holden. the question i wanna know and would like your guys knowledge on whether to keep the motor as a 304 and make it strong. or is it cheaper in parts to just put a 355 stroker kit in it.
As it stand the 304 has 130,000 on the motor and in needs a total rebuild. so a crank grind, the bore is standard and may just need a hone etc. I have a brand new 218 blue racer cam shaft for it, 70mm throttle body ready to go on. so what else would anyone suggest for a decent street set up. (Flat top piston, compression, cam, injectors etc) or a good setup with this cam and throttle.
Or for the price of a 355 kit (new pistons, crank, rods, bearings, gaskets, etc) starting at the cheap end of the market $1500 is that a better option. And can anyone recommend pro-comp gear.

They are pretty strong to start with. A rebuild with standard parts other than good pistons, new rod bolts and a new oil pump will see it pretty damn good. It will be no weaker than if you stroke it to 350.
If you go down the 350 path a COME kit at $19 |

COME does top shelf work. I agree.
These days you can get a SCAT stroker crank and rods for a very good price. I just supplied a 355 crank and H-Beam Rods for $1100 , Pistons are extra depending on what your doing with the motor.. SCAT also make a cra

Clearanced in the base of the bores for the rod bolts. Simply copy off a mid VR onwards 304 block (or use one of them). The block you want is one that is blank on the side where yours will say 5.0.

a few more questions about the stroker, would a mild 355 be equal to a wild 308/304? What pistons are used on 355 some? sort of off the shelf chev? When you get a crank balanced do you get the balancer and flywheel/flexplate to suit. Can you use standa |

No. 350 will have more torque. Depends upon rods. If you use a crank with Holden big ends you just use Holden 5.7/350 pistons. If you use a crank with LJ Chev big ends then pistons are different. I think you can use Chev 377(aka383) stroker pistons with |

what is the offset on a stroker crank with 5.7? and you would use just standard chev 5.7 pistons for that crank? i see alot of 3.48" cranks that use a 5.627"rod. |

A Holden 5.7 is 350 cubes. Same bore/stroke as a 350 Chev ie 4" bore, 3.48" stroke. The only difference between available cranks is one uses a Holden big end so you use standard Holden rod (HT to VSIII 253 or 308) and the other uses a Chev big end so you |

Byron, you're on the money with those ebay cranks. Seen 2 failures in the last 2 months with my own eyes, and there's been more reports on forums around the place too.

Sounds like a much better deal for you running the HQ heads. They will work just nice. Of course the VN heads are better for making a bit more power, but with a HUGE $$$$ changeover cost for you. Better off spending your money on a crank & pistons rathe

You will need to measure head chambers, measure if block has been decked, look at different piston options and head gaskets to work out your engine compression. Lots of work involved, this is the difference between professional engine builds and a back ya

Talk to COME before you do anything. Their 350 kit includes nearly everything, and comes completely balanced ready to go. You'll find by the time you add up all the stuff you'll need to do it yourself it's not that far off, maybe you'll be paying |
