can you fit a M21 lay gear into a M20 gear box? since it needs to be fixed i thought id change the ratios also...thanks

Yes you can. Youll have to change 3rd gear and 4th gear (input shaft) as well, but the rest is the same.
You can also buy an XU-1 repro cluster (lay gear) and install it with an M21 input shaft and keep the M20 3rd gear. Gives you the same ratios as an M

there is no fourth gear its direct 1st 2nd 3rd direct

thanks for that Byron. getting a M21 is almost impossible. there is a local wrecker here who wrecked a VH SS. wants $750 for his M21. he has had it for over a year. i see alot of imput shafts and gears on Ebay and thought to give it a go. its going back i

I'd just leave it as an M20 with that diff. Same strength, same top gear, just better first.

the gear on the input shaft is the gear that drives the laygears.
When you select 4th the input shaft is locked to the main shaft

Yes that is correct, and hence why 4th gear is 1:1. Exactly the same as a 3 spd where 3rd gear is 1:1. The input shaft contains the gear that drives the cluster for 1st-3rd and reverse but it also has dog teeth and synchro seat for 4th gear.
