My 308 powerglide Brougham is original engine wise apart from a bigger single system. Im happy with the performance (or lack there of) but it doesn't always start as easily as it might and I am over playing with points. I see other posts here about HEI dizzys. Will my car benefit from one? Which type should I look for? What wears on these, how do I know if its good? Do I need to change anything else, (coil?) Will my tacho still work, (HT GTS dash) Does anyone have one ready to go they want to sell? Thanks

Yes. WB 253/308 or VC-VL 253/304/308. Dizzy itself can wear in the shaft. Modules do fail. Get it recoed when you get one. When you buy one get the coil too. Tacho will still work fine. They have a big cap on them that may foul on engine or firewal Edited by user Friday, 19 September 2008 8:38:18 PM(UTC)

Thanks Byron and Dr. T, I have just seen some options on ebay, new dizzys, some with coil in cap and some without, for $100 or less. Does anyone know anything about these?

Those Procomp units are small block Chev design, but built to suit a Holden V8. They are cheap Chinese made. Buy two so that when you get stranded you can change it out. Caps and rotor buttons are dear too.

Have a good search around this forum for all the bad stories on Pro-Comp gear. You will find enough to put you off for a lifetime. Its cheap rubbish made in China with the quality tolerances of a house brick. Stay Away !!

When people talk about regraphing the HEI ignition system , what and how is it exactly done. Can it be done at home or does an auto sparky have to do it?
Cheers

Hi 81837
Green goes to coil - terminal & pink goes to coil + terminal.
Make sure you use the correct HEI coil & also, you must run 12 volts to the + terminal of the coil. Do not use the old yellow wire, as it only has 8 volts to it.

I have a hq ute with a 253 and a gts instrument panel. It has a wb efi distributor and coil. (This was all in the car when I got it.) The tacho reads real low, approx 1500rpm = 70km/h. I checked the diff ratio and found it is 3.55:1
Anyone have any id

Just taking a stab - Coil voltage? Try running a temporary wire (fused appropriately)directly from the battery to the coil +ve and drive it and see if the revs indicate higher. Dont leave it there for too long just in case its still got a 9V coil on it.

Ive been meaning to check the wiring. Ill put a voltmeter on it first, if its 9v then Ill try a 12v link.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Is there a 6/8 cylinder switch on the HQ GTS tacho like the HG? If so, if 6 is selected, the tach will read low.
Thanks all, Ill have a go at installing the dizzy and coil tomorrow.

I thought that if 6 was selected it would read high, as its getting 8 pulses instead of the expected 6. Although thinking about it, aftermarket tachos have a 6 cylinder and a 4/8 cylinder switch so it must count pulses like a 4 cylinder.
One more thin
