I have a 1986 XF and the temperature guage goes to extreme heat and back to half way and a little crazy from side to side, but to it doesn't over heat. Would it be in the dash cluster or the thermostat? Cheers Phill.

Maybe an air lock in the cooling system? Try bleeding it out? If not, I would think faulty thermostat or a wire earthing occasionally.
