I have a 1986 XF and the temperature guage goes to extreme heat and back to half way and a little crazy from side to side, but to it doesn't over heat.
Would it be in the dash cluster or the thermostat?

both my fords do this to varying degrees, i have always figured it is the thermostat opening, or being a bit sticky?

Maybe an air lock in the cooling system? Try bleeding it out? If not, I would think faulty thermostat or a wire earthing occasionally.

i know its probably way late but for other people having the same thing... i've got the LCD dash on my XF and after being in the auto-elec game for a few years and gettin them sent in by the bucket load.. its the LCD unit itself... goto repco or auto-barn
