The XS650,is that a Yammy twin?
Ive never had or pulled apart a ride-on mower before but if I understand you correctly,you want to turn a horizontal drive into a vertical drive.
What about a very small differential turned on its side?

Mount your engine across the back and chain drive down to the axle.
You wont have a reverse gear though.
