Is it possible to run a 253 crank in 308 bore with light weight pistons?
If its possible what pistons can be used.

Yes its possible, but there would be no benefit I could see as itd cost you heaps more adding weight to try to balance it. Youd be better off starting with a 308 crank and removing weight.

If the 4" pistons weighed the same as a stock 253 piston no extra weight would need to be added, yes?

I guess so but youll still have to balance it all,the last thing you want is to start it and hear that rumble before it lets go.There is no use doin this in my opinion as the bore/stroke relationship will suffer,as i said my opinion...cheers

The 253 and 308 have the same stroke. I just thought it would be an easy way to use light pistons in Holden V8 with a 4" bore.

Same stroke? 253 is 3.062 and 308 is 3.480. Counterweights are different and the cost of these ultra light pistons wouldnt be worth even trying.

253 and 308 are the same stroke just different bore size, yes if you are using a lighter piston with the 253 crank in a 308 it does work engine builders have been doing it fdor years

3.48" stroke in a 308 is a 350.

If this was done I think you would lose some torque I still think there are better ways IE;308 slight cam, solid lifters(for revability)and that would give you torque and revs..Is that what your after? the price would be cheaper i think and easier to build |

there is a hot LJ running around here with a 253 crank in a 308 block. the balancing guy said it really hard to balance and was charged for the time it took. and it revs like a 308 with a alloy flywheel. really bad torque and you can just back off the thr

I have a complete VB Red 253 in bits and the opprotunity to buy a 308 short motor. I currently have a blue 253 VH that needs welch plugs and a good clean up. I can either build a mild 253 from the one in bits and swap them over or go wild with a 253 Edited by user Tuesday, 28 October 2008 4:48:53 AM(UTC)

How much weight would you really be saving?.... I would think in the end it would be money spent better els were in the rebuild. A lighter crank with off set ground journals is counter productive in making power. Playing around with internals from one si
