this is probable a stupid question is a 3.3 red motor no vl783...originly from a vl model commodore ? cheers

red 3.3 for memory the eng # starts with VL but what do you mean by originally from vl if the question your asking is, is the motor from a vl the answer is no

VL = high comp carburetted 202 from VB-VK. Red (9 port) version is from a VB originally.

VL783xx will be the number (5 digits) as they never got to VL783xxx (6 digits) before they stopped making them (actually the iron V8 which continued the numbers didnt even get that high in VS3 - they only reached the high 600,000 mark).

So in that case

The "L" part of the prefix actually started with HQs and LJs in the early 70s, ie QL, JL, HL etc. Check the date cast code to cross check which model its from I think its near the oil pump or oil filter on sixes.

thanks all it is a carburetted engine it also has glass dome petrol pump and a bosh starter on it the like i have never seen before its seems smaller in diameter and length than other bosh starters cheers

Glass dome pump is normal for almost all red motos. Starter is probably off a Starfire 4.

Commodores ran both types of starter on the 6.
They also had 2 types of alternator, and 2 types of wiper motor!
