Hi all

Just finisehd reading the Wikipedia article on Ford Motor Company (not Ford Australia). There is a claim in the section headed 'the Ford Pinto memo' that after the Ford Pinto scandal of the 1970's, Ford shipped faulty plastic fuel tanks to Australia for fitment to the Falcon because they had been banned in the U.S.
According to the site they caused 'Similar problems in Australia'

I have been around a while and I have never heard of Falcon fuel tanks exploding.
Is this really true or total rubbish? Anyone know any more?
Should be amended if it is wrong.

I think the Pinto problem was not so much with the tank as with some dodgy wiring that started the fires...

Falcon never had a plastic fuel tank till the XD came out. So I'm guessing the info is false.

If the Pinto had a plastic fuel tank which I doubt they did it was not the tank that was the problem it was that the tank ruptured and could explode in a rear ender due to it's placement.

The US Government changed the law after the Pinto debacle and

Aussie XD Falcon did have a problem with plastic tanks, if the earth wire was not connected, between the filler neck and the body, there was a possibility that you could get a static spark when filling with fuel, and have a Ford BBQ. I started my apprenti

71 or thereabouts Tc/Td 4 cylinder.
Ford did fix the problem I believe they staked the inlet pipe to stop it moving. They claimed it was probably loosend by heavy handed mechanics when fiddling with the flexible hose connections.

Ford did eventually recall those Cortinas in about 1980 for this problem. took them a long time but they eventually got around to it.
