I have just bought a really nice original 253 HZ Premier. I have never owned a holden before, always had fords and chryslers. I want to put in an engine with a fair bit more grunt than the 253 but want to use the car as a daily driver. If someone can answer the following questions it would be a big help. 1. Is a 350 chev an easy option? 2. Can you put in a 5.0 ltr EFI engine from a later model easily. 3. Is a LS1 a worthwhile option.
I realise that the auto will have to be changed as well along with diff and brake upgrades. I want to end up with a reliable driver with some get up and go but I don't want to undertake a major rebuild of the whole car.
Thanks

350 Chev is not so easy as it needs to comply with ADR27A OR run on straight LPG. The easiest way to get a carbied 350 to comply is to copy what was in an Chev truck sold new by GMH in 1978-80.
EFI 304 from a VN/VP is the easiest. It will bolt in exact |

Thanks Byron, would the EFI engine from a VN/VP have to be passed by an engineer? Also if I went with the TH700 will it fit straight in?

Yes you'll need Engineering but only for pollution ADR compliance, and to make sure you have catalytic converters and ULP filler neck. TH700R4 almost fits straight in. A shortened tailshaft and a slight mod to the gearbox crossmember, which means getting |

The 304 efi sounds like the way to go. I have limited space and resources where I live, does anyone know of a workshop that may be able to help me with this type of conversion. I live in the Hills area in Sydney.

I think the best option for you would be to get a 308 short motor and swap all of the 253 gear on to it and drop it back in. Carbs and points can be just as reliable and in most cases cheaper to fix. The heads and all the accessories you currently have |

My opinion, for what its worth: Go for the injected 5.0litre. I have one in my HZ Sandman replica ute and it goes good. Reliable, strong, and on gas cheap enough to run. (or so I tell myself). Good luck.

ps The trimatic you now have with a service, new clutches and a shift kit will be sufficient for a stockish 308. Diff fro a 253 will be the same as the stock 308 in a HZ, change it if it breaks.

Im not sure about the HZ diffs, HQs had Banjos but the I think the later cars with that body (HZ and WB) had Salisburys and some had disc brakes. I have an 82 VH with a 253 in it and the diff and trimatic is the same strength size etc as the 308 one, so |

All V8s with trimatics are whats called the Aussie pattern for bell housings but the 308s can be Aussie or Turbo. All 308 manual cars with M21s are Aussie pattern. The Aussie has the bolt holes right at the top of the bellhousing and a smaller locat Edited by user Tuesday, 15 April 2008 8:56:17 PM(UTC)

Byron,
As you stated above 253s in a VH had the small Salisbury standard, did these have an LSD centre or is this how you can tell if it has been optioned up to the large Salisbury. Is the VH small Salisbury the same as the UC one?

UC, WB, VB-VH all had the small salisbury (hidden banjo) as standard AFAIK (except those which had the large salisbury standard eg 308 VB-VH).

Its OK for a 308, but with big tyres and an LSD they do break especially with a manual - ask any Brock owner. Drive sensibly and they are alright. For performance work youd be better off with a 9" or a VN diff especially as parts are much easier to get ho |
