Hey guys, has anyone on here painted their car with water based paint? I am thinking of painting my Sandman with water based paint and clear coating it with 2 pak. Just wondering how water based paint holds up over time?

I have bought some and am painting a hard hat with it at the moment as a trial. It sprays really well, gives a nice finish and is a breeze to clean out guns and pots. Very impressed so far.

So nobody knows about or has used water based automotive paint? I only recently found out about it but it has been available since 1975 and is big in the US and European countries. It is available in Australia and the beauty of it being water based is it

Do you use a 2 pack undercoat or etch to keep the H20 away from porous base coats (and hence bare metal)?

from memory they used a WOW sealer over your standard 2k undercoats

they also installed a whole lot of little air jets in the booth, because you have to blow away the saturated air for it to dry properly

Byron, the recommendation is to etch prime or undercoat with 2 pak, then apply Auto Air basecoat sealer, apply any Auto Air colours or combination of colours (graphics) and then 2 pak clear as a top coat. The beauty of water based colour is not being solv

Ford Australia have been using water based paints on Falcons for about 10 years now.

The main drawback is that everything must be kept at a constant temperature (27 degrees c from memory) to get that great finish.
