Carbon build up in the head chamber can also do this, the carbon retains some heat and continues to ignite the fuel.

If youre sure its an overheating problem check your thermostat and water pump.
Others here have had more than a few dodgy thermostats.
Look in your rad to see if the waters moving past the filler.

So the engine is running on after you turn it off?
Usual cause is idle speed too high.

Before you spend too much time on this, find out what is the true running temperature of the engine.

All you have said so far is, "it seems hot & the gauge reads half". 80 to 85 degrees at the thermostat housing is considered normal.

Mate listen to the bloke that told you to run a thermostat. they are in there for a purpose. what they do is give the water a chance to be cooled by the radiator, if there is no restriction the water can flow around and around so fast it wont be cooled pr
