How long did you run it for? If the lifters bled down itd take more than a quick fire up, "whats that noise?" and shut down again for them to pump fully. Especially if your pumps not up to scratch and the oils old. |

It is typical for hyd lifters to empty after a few weeks. Used daily you dont hear it. The lifters could be OLD and tired and no longer pump up as they should, hence they bleed oil quicker.
Therefore dont worry if the noise goes after a minute or two.

BCB,
That is correct, there is something else under the pushrods. The Lifters are small cylinders about the size of your thumb. Usually pretty much flat where they rub on the cam, and a cup with hole in at the other end that the pushrod sits in. F |

BCB, oil pumps of that era, as far as i know, are gear type. Two gears spinning and the oil is passed around them, between teeth and pump body.
If oil pressure is low, your oil could be very old and thin. That would help explain low pressure and strugg |

you can also remove the cover off the oil pump and fill it full of grease to get the oil going again. Before you do that though remove your oil filter and prime it full of oil as that may be enough.
You can also fit a VN V8 oil filter as they are sma |

thatswhat i thought doc terry, the oil pump is the boxy thing the filter is screwed onto, is this hard to replace? cause i reckon it is worn out, and could be causing lack of oil in head etc? so if it is like a mech petrol pump, i will change it over |

Another handy toy is Moreys oil stabiliser. For wornish engines it thickens the oil a wee bit and adds a bit of additional slippery as well. Not as handy as a full rebuild, but keeps you running without some of the scarier noises.
