So, ended up completely rebuilding the motor after what started as a pull down to inspect the bores (see "fresh motor just started smoking"). Decided to replace my noisey (badly made) cam gears with adjustable ones since my torque curve was amazingly flat, but the motor lacked up higher. A matter of 2 degrees, and you can feel the delivery has changed. Not like its worlds apart, and the shaved head plus bigger exhaust valves would heighten the effect, but still, i can feel the car wind out better, builds more progressively than before.

Very, very happy. And no horrible irregular gear mesh noises any more.

Now though, i've got to re-tune. HEI dizzy in red 202, what's a good starting point for timing? I've heard between 8-12. When i built the motor i had 7 degrees, but the tuner put it way past that, to the point where it was hard to gauge on a timing light, that's why i'm unsure now. I marked the dizzy before removal, but the mark got washed off with some over-zealous degreasing.

Oops.

I can give full engine specs because i'm sure you'd need more info to give even a good reference?

Did you replace the balancer (or re-mark the TDC while heads were off). Something which bit me big time in a past engine was an old balancer where the outer ring shifted. Unless the balancer is sparkly new, then set to near enough to get firing, then tu

Cheers, that is sound advice.

Balancer is new. Ive got timing at 9 degrees for now, which seems fine. I want to re-bed the motor before i take it off for a proper dyno tune.
