Hi guys just a couple of quick checks before I spend any money or time on the 186 I have
Engine number 186P27XXXX would make it late in HK / HT production? Block Casting L119 would make it Nov 11 1969?
on both the head and block (near the fuel pump) is stamped "M 681" I have never seen it before?? is it a engine reco shop matching head to block? Heads are 7437397 - 186 low compression part number? casting L270 - 27 Nov 1970? 7 L - low compression, what does the 7 stand for?

any help would be appreciated

Matt

That engine will be HT. 11/69 is well into HT production.

On the head, all 186s (XU-1 aside) use the same combustion chamber ie there is no 186 low comp head. Same with 179 and 202. The L on the head is only applicable to the 161 for that vintage.

Your date coding is correct on both parts.
Is the stamped M 681 number on the engine, on the pad next to the factory engine number.
As this is where I have seen most engine re conditioners put there numbers.
Also is this head still on
