Hey Guys,

A beginer question what is the best way to locate tdc on a 351 clevo.
I dont belive my timing mark is correct, or the dizzy has been reinstalled wrong, sounds flat and laboured at 10 degree advance.
Any help would be great.

take the number 1 spark plug out and put a screw driver down the hole and turn the motor over by hand (using the fan and pushing down on the belt) when then screw driver stops going up and starts to going down you are at TDC

Dave is right, but his way will give u tdc but a 50/50 chance of being tdc exhaust stroke, best bet is to pull no 1 plug out , jam dunny paper in it and bump the engine on the starter, when the paper shoots out, you are tdc ignition stroke.

So if its a tooth out either way, is that going to cause me problems?
And would the engine run if it was 180 out?

It wont physically start and run if its 180 out, it will pop and bang and carry on, if you are a tooth out, it should start but u will find it hard to rev the engine, and will porbably need to keep the revs up around 2K plus , if it runs grab a timing lig

Thanks for that docktor, I'll give it a try.
What do you think a fairly warm clevelands timing should be?
I have a info card for the scorcher ignition in it, asking for 14 degree, from what ive read seems a bit to much for a clevo.

Is it a reco motor ?. Cam specs ? , head work. is it gunna consistently rev past 6500 ?. for a stockish engine, I would look at around 6 degrees static timing and anything up to 20+on total timing pending on distributor. I am not familar with the scorcher
