On the red 6 cyl head, I know that 179 186 202 have a 'L' cast on the pass side rear. and the others have 'H',referring to the combustion chamber type. I have seen a '3' on this spot, and a '9'. just wondering is it a xu-1 head or what.

You would need to come up with the cast number at the front of the head and the date code.

I know what you mean..and as a general rule I would say you are right...but its the part number and date code that would ID the head.
