I saw that. Notice how close it is in price to the XW GT too. All I can say though is people seem to think that an SLR5000 is worth $50k, and an XW8 is a whole class of vehicle above that again and 10x rarer. |

I agree an XW8 is more collectible and a lot rarer than a SLR5000 HQ prices have been surprising me lately.

That's getting into HKTG 81837M money, if they get their price. How many do we think were made with this option? I've seen numbers anywhere between 50 and 800. I would have thought the HQ350 coupe, although more common, was more desirable than the XW8 and they don't seem to go for that money yet. I guess it comes down to whether people are buying rarity or desirability, or just a nice toy for the self managed superannuation fund with some hope of capital growth.
I think I'll wander along to the auction and watch the fun.

What is on the Service/Warranty report have been counted and it is just over 200 in both auto and manual. However the HQ Elizabeth report stops mid 6/74 so whatever auto examples were built after that time at Elizabeth (manuals were finished by then) is on top of that. It does appear that GMH had a quantity of L30 M41 combinations left at the end of HQ (ordered for predicted sales, probably for Statesman) so in 9/74-10/74 built a batch of XW8's at Elizabeth and used them internally later released as used cars via dealer tender. They seem to have done something similar with GTS at the end of HK to be rid of 5litre M21 combinations. Probably so these end of series cars don't detract from sales of the upcoming series - if you went into a dealer in 11/74 to buy a GTS auto sedan and you could have had a 350 manual HQ at a runout price what would you buy?
I agree though that even though they were far more common a GTS350 coupe should be a far better and more collectable car than an XW8. And for $80-90k you can still find a decent HG GTS350M which is about the same build numbers as an XW8. |

Some people claim 52 manuals and 160+ autos, which equates well with your 200+ number. That makes the manual a very rare beast indeed, particularly as the survival rate would have been fairly low.

I picked up an ek sedan from a property and asked if he had any Hq-z cars he said a year or so ago He had a few which ,was about twenty and one he said he had was a Hq with a 350 and Muncie they pulled that combo out and put it in a stockcar ( a barred out torana for circle track) then the crushers got the rest :(( was only a few years back maybe five , sadly a lot of neat cars went like that. I sent a few but not keepers like that.!! But some I let go or couldn't afford!! ( back then was nothing like now ) Edited by user Sunday, 13 September 2015 8:07:17 PM(UTC)

Even though the entire place was reeling from the guy who paid $600k for an old Harley speedway bike and sidecar, there was still enough focus for the XW GT to go for $77k, and the HQ had 4 bidders, but was passed in at $80k. That's right folks, $80k for a 4 door HQ.

I've got a 1918 Indian worth about 10 times less and looks 10 times better. Wow again with an $80K offer on the HQ XW8 and the biggest WOW of all, he turned that offer down!

It was an interesting night. Most quality cars went for more than the guide price range, sometimes 30-40% more.
From a conversation I overheard between a couple of Shannons staff there was an offer on the table for the Harley before the auction which was quite a few multiples of the "$100k+" number, so they knew it would be big. I wonder if they waived the $250 buyers premium for the bloke that bought it?
There was a nice 3 litre Bentley, guided at $350-400k and passed in at $360k, so there are some confident vendors out there and, for the right cars, plenty of people with cash to splash.
There was a very rough 4.2 "E" type coupe that was guided at $45-55k that went for $66k.
The XW GT had been messed with, being a factory auto which had a toploader added afterwards, so the $77k was, I thought, a strong price for it.
The HQ was a good resto, and attracted quite a bit of interest. It was the last item in the auction, and plenty stayed for it. It wouldn't surprise me if it sells in the next few days, as they said it was very close to the reserve.
