Hi Guys,

I just wanted to find out some information about my van, as I am starting to think about changing it back to factory colours with stickers.

I have done a lot of research to try to identify it as a HZ sandman, but it seems like that is not really possible. It seems that we can say without a doubt, that a certain car 'is not', but it is near impossible to say that a certain car 'is'.

The car has a full headlining, gts dash and nose cone, and has the courtesy light switch connected from the front doors and of course sticker kit.

The below information is copied from its identification plates.

Model HZ8WM70
Body No. 435406-A
Trim 1934-23C
Paint 567-30525
Eng L31
Trans M21
RR Axle GV4

Holden HZ Panel Van
12-78 BHZ 40755A
GVW 2000 kg
Seating Cap. 2

8M70TJL435406Z

So from the identification plates, I believe it was built in Adelaide as a Commercial Van with a 308 engine, 4 spd gearbox with a 3.36:1 Diff. I believe the Adelaide built sandman's did not have any further identification codes (like XX7 or XU3).

If anyone can correct me or provide me with any further information that may help me identify my van as a Sandman, that would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to know any information about the paint and trim colours.

Thanks

I can tell you for certain that that ID originated on a HZ XX7 Sandman panel van.

1934 is Atlantis Blue Metallic.
63C is Buckskin vinyl.

Chassis number aligns fine with the PSN/Body number.

As staged the plates are off an Elizabeth bodied, and Elizabeth assembled van.

Hi Byron, got a van here with full headlining and compliance plate says 2 seats, but no XX7 stamped on the ID plate:

Model - HZ8WM70
Body No - 437137B
Trim - 1927-19V
Paint - 568-30518
Eng - L32
Trans - M20
RRaxle - GV7
Built - 12/77
8M70RHH437137Z
GVW - 2200kg

I initially assumed it wasn't a Sandman, but I need to check. What was the original paint colour?

Thanks,

Anthony.

Not a Sandman as it has black trim. It was Jasmine Yellow.
If it has original headlining it is a comfort pack (option B30) which was headlining and carpet in a van.

Did you get a chassis number? If you did it'll fill a hole in the database, should be pretty close to AHZ07000B

That is really good to know, this car is so far from original it would have been a bit of a crime if it was actually a Sandman.
Compliance plate says AHZ0740B

Thanks for the help,

Anthony.

hiya, just buying (reportedly) a 1975 HJ Sandman with chassis number BHJ06690M. is this consistent with an original HJ Sandman or do you need more details to tell?

That is just a chassis number, they are consecutive for all HJ from that assembly plant (in this case Dandenong), so all you can tell from that number is it is a 7/75 (or very close to that) HJ from Damdenong. Plus you'll never pick a 7/1975 HJ Sandman from ID plates alone, but you can determine for some that they are definitely not a Sandman.

When HX was released - no more Kingswood tagged Sandmans after HJ, although all HX and HZ Sandmans were upgraded to "Kingswood" level they are all plated as Holden lux level.

As a matter of interest, what items are fitted to HX Kingswoods, but not to HX Sandmans ?

Side body mouldings ? Cigarette lighter ? Carpet ? Stainless mouldings front screen & gutters etc.? Kingswood badges ?

Only as a Kingswood Sandman till the end of HJ. Utes were Kingswood, Vans were Holden. Holden Sandman ute was dropped from HJ order procedure released at the start of March 1976 along with HJ coupes.

Terry

Easier probably to state what Kingswood parts were added:

Door trims (and hence Kingswood trim code).
Interior lamp door switches.
Cigar lighter.
Door sill chrome plates.
Grille badge.
Bright insert on rear window rubber (ute only).
Bright tail-light surrounds.
Full length headlining (van only) - came with carpet as part of B30 comfort package.

The things they didn't get and the reason:

Kingswood grille - because they got the GTS's grille.
Kingswood headlight surrounds - because they got black painted GTS examples.
Kingswood side and tailgate strips - because of the decals.
Kingswood dash and steering wheel - because they got U17 dash and GTS steering wheel.
GTS guards - because they got in the way of the SANDMAN logos.
Standard mirrors - because they got the black Lukey Slimline mirrors.
Stainless moulding on the front screen and door handles were black painted.
Kingswood guard and tailgate badges - because the Sandman was now like a HQ GTS sedan where it was no longer an option package on a model but intended as a separate vehicle. They did keep the HOLDEN badge on the tailgate though and the 4.2 or 5.0L badges were optional.

Fair enough. There has been some discussion on the Kingswood Sandman being dropped in late 75 and only being built on Belmont/standard Utes from then on.
