Guys
Is it possible to get a device used to sniff out a leak in an exhaust?
My V6 Hilux makes a sound an awful lot like an exhaust leak, but when I open the bonnet (when cold) put my fingers all around the extractor pipes, and around the exhaust joints i'm buggered if I can find it. It is a full Beaudesert exhausts system from extractors back. ECU throws up the odd 420 or 430 code which normally are from too much airflow through the high flow cats but also can be caused by an exhaust leak.
One exhaust shop reckons it is just normal DOHC lifter noise made louder by the extractors.
It is relatively easy for me to change gaskets but without finding a leak don't know where to start. Plus exhaust/extractor gaskets are expensive. |

The easy way is if you have access to a smoke generator, or can be bothered building one. Shove it up the exhaust when the system is cold and the leaks will be apparent.
The harder way is to restrict the exhaust outlet 50% or so, run the engine and use soapy water in a spray bottle on all the joints.
In both cases a hoist or ramps are essential.

Good ideas. I'll see if I can build a smoke generator, they are cheap on Ebay anyway. I have a 2 post hoist but it is a 4x4 so easy to get under whilst it is on the ground. Extractor face is easy to get to from the engine bay, and the joins to the pipes are easily accessible, hence why I can get my fingers around all joints easily. |

A CO meter such as that used by plumbers to check gas appliances might work ok, no idea on cost though or whether it will work properly post cat.

I bought a Stethoscope. Great for hearing every engine noise imaginable! But I cannot find an exhaust leak, so either there isn't one (which my ears still tell me otherwise) or I can't find it with a stethoscope. |
