They went pretty well. If you can find the test for the 3.55:1 rear axle example it is impressive.

Holy shit !! The Opel's first gear ratio is 3.428. With a final drive of 3.55, it would be pretty good off the line, for a car of the HR's weight.

They were. See if you can find the figures for Dave Bennetts car. Standard bar one of his Perfectune heads. It was quicker over the quarter and to 100mph than a XR GT.

Ok so i have had a look around the hr i found some more numders in the engine bay
The are on the firewall first one is on a tag it is m150697 the second one is stamped into body where the gear box go through the firewll is hr74034m.and i had the body code wrong it reads
Hr225mr-71075m
Any help would be appreciated .iam starting to think dr terry is right about the nasco gear cheers

HR74034M in the effectively the chassis number, this is the number used by VicRoads/RMS etc. to ID the car. It indicates is was the 74,034th HR made in the Melbourne (Dandenong) plant.
M150697 is the Tag number. These are a bit different. To my knowledge it indicates that this car was the 150,697th vehicle built in the Dandenong plant since the beginning of HD (yes HD) production. This number also includes any Pontiacs, Chevs, Toranas, Bedfords etc. that may also have been built at that plant. If indeed any of these brands were built there.

HR225MR-71075M is the body number & indicates that this car was the 71,075th HR built at Dandenong. We've posted its explanation in an earlier post.

I believe that HD & HR chassis numbers start at 0001 & yes the body numbers just start a 1 (without the leading zeros) for each model variant.

You've just about got all the numbers, with the exception of possibly the most important one of all. What is the engine number of the 186S ? It is stamped into the block on the machined pad next to the driver's side engine mount, just forward of the distributor.

Also, if you look closely on the little tin shield on the front of the diff you might see the rear axle ratio stamped there. You will need to clean it thoroughly & use a torch to read it. It's just rearward of the rear uni flange. It should read 3.36 or 3.55.

Other than that you can look for the various parts that are unique to the 186S, Opel & disc brake combination. The extra gauges in the dash, along with its unique red ammeter wiring. The rubber floor shift boot for the Opel gearstick. The correct booster & brake pipes for the disc brake set-up. The correct WW Bendix-Stromberg twin barrel carby with its unique linkage. The carb should be stamped 23-201 & made in the US, not Australia as the later ones were.

Are there any signs of it having an LSD or power steering ?

Ok i will have a look for these things i did notice on the carb made in usa my dad has the two motors the one that was in it last was 186a and the original one he took out of it because it seized up has 186k followed by numbers we have two
Opel transmission my dad said it is not a lsd but i will look and it didnt have power steering.

...it appears these HR's were a fairly Hi-Po jigger .. was there a road wheel/tyre option to cater for this higher performance which may have been "shown" in the option codes numbers ?

Not sure how deep you want to get in to the date coding numbers side of things but they are on a lot of parts on these cars with them.

Thanks mate i just want to find out as much information about these cars as possible as iam planning on restoring this the way my dad bought it plus i find this car very interesting

...I've just read an interesting snippet on another forum from 2008 where Dr Terry explains of a "very rare" HD/HR heavy duty wheel option that He'd personally never seen any of....

...This type of option may help to de-mystify some of the rarer option codes seen on these obscurely specced models....??

Where would you get rebuild kits for the 186s motors and a kits for the opel gearbox?what would they cost thank you.

...as interesting as this car has become, could a breakdown of the code 1782 go something like this....

....1 = 186
....7 = 4 speed
....8 = ?
....2 = 186S options

...In a perfect world this would leave us with only the 8 number to figure out ! Also could the numeral 2 be the package of items that make up a 186S car....Instruments, mechanicals, badges, ?? etc. or is it just the 186S engine that is given the code ?
