Does anyone here have the inside word on Holdens efforts to archive the historic documents and engineering drawings they've amassed over the years, before they shut the gates.
Its all good to archive and save it but access to things like the engineering drawings should be in the plan too I think. Without access whats the point of archiving it?

GMH have an extensive drawing and documentation archive section that is safely stored at Fishermen's Bend. It is considered confidential and doesn't leave the premises. It is not available for access by people within their company without the right approval level. GM & GMH value their heritage and the closing of the doors refers to "manufacturing" only. They will continue to sell cars and design vehicles for the global market.

Do you think there will ever be a time when it wont be considered confidential and maybe allow Rare Spares or GMH themselves to produce Factory Assembly Manuals? Factory assembly manuals and engineering drawings are available for many classics in the USA, seems like its all 45 year old top secret stuff here though. It must be a GMH thing because GM in the US dont mind sharing the information with enthusiasts. www.themotorbookstore.com/gmasma.html

Hopefully someone from Rare Spares could answer this.
Thinking back a year or two, I 'am sure I noticed Rare Spares started advertising some of their parts as "approved by Holden".
Did Rares get access to some of the archival blueprints to manufacture these parts from?
The "approved by Holden" statement sort of gives me the impression they may off.

The fact that we are currently unable to borrow or copy these 40-plus year old engineering drawings from GMH or their licencee Rare Spares we are still legaly allowed to copy and reproduce and distribute (not for profit) whatever engineering drawings you may have in your collection for 'research or study' purposes, based on the fact that there is no commercial availability and its used for research and study only. The exception is called 'Fair Dealing' and its an exception to copyright infringement law. "To balance the rights of copyright owners with the needs of the public to have access to copyright materials, the Copyright Act provides a number of exceptions to the general rules regarding infringement of copyright" One of those exceptions is called 'Fair Dealing' https://www.ag.gov.au/Ri...pyright-October2012.pdf
The other thing is if the document was produced prior to 1st May 1969 it may have even less restrictions on it. Not totaly sure about that though. So with all that in mind can someone please post 600 pages of HK engineering drawings to me, that would be appreciated thanks. Oh well it was worth a shot. Wayne

Rare Spares are bound by a strict confidentiality agreement with GMH and are not be able to release, or even disclose of any documentation that maybe the registered property of GMH. This covers all drawings, tooling and the restoration agreement itself.

Yeah I guessed RS are able to access the documents but nothing more. I'd like to see Rare Spares make a proposal to GMH to reproduce the assembly manuals as GM and other manufacturers have done. We all want accuracy in our restorations and I think that would also benefit Rare Spares bottom line. Come up with a proposal and make it happen I say.
As I mentioned in my previous post theres nothing legally stopping members of the public sharing their copies. If I had a copy I'd be handing it out like lollies.

Wayne, From past experiences we reproduced a couple of documents, as per original, with GMH permission. This was based on customers advising they were "hot" items. The end result is that there is still a lot of the stock remaining after 8 years. With production costs and quantities it may not be financially viable when the funds can be used making items that are more practical. The sales volumes here, compared to the USA, are the biggest drawback. Your suggestions are noted and appreciated.

Holden has a number of archives. there is the engineering archive with all the engineering drawings etc, a photographic archive of all the pictures taken by GMH photographers, including press release photos etc, there are also collections of GM-H internal paperwork, such as People magazines, dealer magazines like up front etc.
These archives would fill many houses if they were placed into book form for sale to the public through rares. Would there be a market (economic viability) for such a venture? Holden produce cars to sell for profit and are changing to an importer to sell cars for profit.
Enthusiasts in the US are larger in number so they manage to work with the companies to get copies of some data.
The other problem is Holden does have a stricter privacy policy. They maybe part of GM but that is it they are just a part.
I am sure there are many enthusiasts that would love a copy of some part of GM-Hs archives.
Had a fellow contact me re my current book and he wanted to know if it listed every Holden with all options on each. He was a little disappointed that he could not buy such a book. Imagine how big that would be (there have been over 7 million Holdens made). At 100 cars per page would make 35000 pages or 70 reams of paper or 3.5 meters tall.

Thank you Warren for clarification and confirmation of my previous comments. With all the management changes at GMH it is becoming a lot more difficult to have access, approval and assistance than in the past. The tendency is to look forward rather than behind as the competition in sales heats up. Today's CAR GUIDE comments that GMH has a blokey image when the majority of decision makers are female. All of these factors contribute.

It's pleasing to see that ALL the Technical Service Bulletins for the Holden range from 1948 to 1957 have been published recently on the FX-FJ forum for downloading or perusal. Proper channels were consulted, and for the enthusiast or researcher there is still a goldmine of practical information within.

Hi Warren .. in a brief message exchange with Dr Terry today the notion was put forward that the TSB's for HD onwards would probably/possibly be of good benefit to the Fastlane Forum, seeing that was when the "go fast" options in those earliest model/series started making life interesting.... ...I say what can be lost by archiving the whole lot here ?...especially when the more info that can be had or gleaned can only be for the betterment of the whole enthusiast movement...and we should never think we're the very last bastion of the researchers within that movement.......
