Hi all,
Mark The answer to your question about why some housings have 2 long bolts in the bottom relates to the fact that as time progressed and higher ratio diffs were introduced, the pinion diameter on 3.08 and 2.78 became to large for the earlier 3.36 , 3.55 housing. the answer being to change the housing shapes for the two groups of ratios. Even in Hq style salsbury diffs there are 2 different housings for high and low ratio diffs.clear as mud eh, Ian

I agree, the housing was altered to fit the larger 2.78 & 3.08 crown wheels with the change in offset of the hemisphere..

Although I've never tried to do it, you could probably fit 3.36 or 3.55 gears (with their hemisphere) into the long bolt housing. There would be plenty of room.

That could be what this diff is. I don't believe that Holden ever built a 3.36 diff centre in a 'long bolt' housing.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

I don't either Terry. But i've learned over the years never to categorically ignore evidence, hence my interest anyway. I can't see any evidence though in documentation of the stronger carrier being used with shorter gears in commercials for HD appication.
