I have have bought a HG ute which was built in September 71
Small tag 80180GH209199
Large Tag
Model;HG 80180M Body ; 22346B Trim; 1821 12A Paint; 56813134
Body Number AHG57507B
Engine number QD46015
From what I can gather its a HQ paint code and engine would the engine match this car?

No, that is a HQ engine. The original would be prefixed GD, GE, GL or GM. HQ paint was the current paint at the time hence it is normal for HG and LC to have HQ colours. |

QD46015 I think is a late 173 HQ engine number.

It is early HQ 173 high compression. Roughly July-Sept 1971. In fact if it has a G rather than an Q i'd say it is close to the correct sequence number for the HG. |

It may have been a misread and actually was GD46015. It is looking like these late HG's might be like LH and early LX Toranas, some have HQ engine number prefixes and some HG prefixes. The Toranas are similar where auto 6cyl have Holden engines and manual 6cyl have Torana engines. It may well be that say auto HG 6cyl with AHG chassis numbers have G prefixes and manual have Q prefixes. This isn't the only one to turn up with a HQ engine number prefix, so it won't be an error. It doesn't make sense though, as GMH went to great lengths to make sure LC/LJ engines use a different prefix which I've always thought was as the sump was different, Bedfords do too using F prefix numbers. It would make sense for HG engines to be different due to the different sump, yet these HG's with Q prefixes exist. Edited by user Tuesday, 21 June 2016 1:39:25 PM(UTC)

The lower thermostat housing is different, as is the carby. I couldn't imagine swapping engine bits & pieces of that nature on the floor at the assembly plant. Dr Terry is spot on. The phenomenon isn't only Acacia Ridge assembled ute either, it is utes and vans also from other assembly plants.
Terry, can you think of anything unique about a HG auto 173 or 202 engine versus a HQ auto engine (bits in the above post aside) that is on the engine when it comes out of the engine crates at the assembly plants? Like does the auto HG engine use a different carby to the auto HQ one but the manuals are the same? |

To my knowledge all the carbies are different between HQ & HG, because the linkage attaches at 180 degrees. Cool, it has me perplexed, but LH with HQ engines for autos did too until the clutch lightbulb went off. |
