hi, i was wondering if anyone has purchased new replacement standard guards (not gts) for the hk ht hg model from any suppliers that bolt straight on without hours of trying to get them to fit or is just easier to replace the rusted section with a repair panel?

The main thing to understand about these panels is that Rare Spares did not instigate the tooling. The overseas manufacturer also sells to other parties. When they first came on the market there were some fitment issues and we stopped selling them.We sent two people over to the factory for a week to try and get improvement in the production process and managed to get them improved from the original first supply. As with most panels for those older vehicles there may be some work required for fitment. It seems that those purchased over the last year or two have had no other issues that we are aware of.

Even when GM-H were pumping out 13,000 HK, HT or HG vehicles a month the panel fit was variable and often lousy. When you pull an original fender off an untouched vehicle often the bending and bashing of the various lugs done in the factory to make them line up is something to see.
These cars were appliances back in the day, not showpiece collectors items and built to a price and built without the benefit of 3D CAD models, CADCAM tooling design and the kind of tolerances we take for granted today.

I have fitted quite a few original GM-H HT fenders over the years, and still have a few I bought in the late 1970s early 1980s and I can assure you they aren't paint and bolt on items. Some require tweaks to the indicator lamp recess, some to the headlamp recess, some to the inner fender angles.
The good old days were not as good as you might think. I think we expect a better standard of the cars we restore these days compared to what the factory was turning out 45 years ago, hence we are far more critical of the parts we fit.

Also, it isn't unknown for the bash and boggery industry (panel beaters) to exaggerate the challenges they face in order to charge more money.

I'm a big fan of using restored original parts wherever possible, but in my opinion a tweaked new panel should be a better job long term than an old rusty panel with a weld in section and filler over the top, no matter how good the panel beater is.

If there really are major issues with the panels, rather than denounce the whole panel why not feed the details back to Rare Spares and see if the issues can be addressed?
The tooling for these panels is a low speed low volume type, and much more easily modified and corrected than the high volume punch and die set type used for high speed production volumes.

I agree with Tour Director. Many of these new replacement panels were pretty ordinary when they first appeared, but they have improved with time.

I was involved in fitting some EH front guards last year & they were an awful fit.

I saw some others recently & they markedly better in several areas & they did fit quite well. The door & bonnet gaps were the main concern & these later ones were more than acceptable in those areas.

Always a good idea to ask about this sort of thing.

I suppose try & find somebody who has had experience with some guards that were recently purchased.

I bought a pair for my HK from the first batch and they needed a fair bit of work to make fit. A mate bought a pair not too long ago and his just needed a bit of work to get the holes to line up. You'd have to do exactly the same to any NOS panel as no 2 cars have exactly the same dimensions. I know I'm much happier with brand new panels rather than some that have rusted then been repaired..

People who buy a panel and think they can bolt them on are not realistic. That applies to second hand genuine panels also. Even many mainstream late model manufacturers provide panels which need a massage to fit. These HK panels are no different.

When you say a bit or work to make them fit, what were the issues and what sort of "work" did you do to get a satisfactory fit?

I just checked with a customer who purchased a pair last week. Unfortunately it will be a couple of weeks before he has them fitted. If you send a reply direct to me advising your location I will try and assist. From previous comments all replacement panels need to be checked for fitment first and in some cases minor adjustments may be required. Three recent shipments have had no issues over the last 6 months.

We fitted both left and right repo guards to my Hk Premier they where a little tricky to fit no worse than old replacements as long as you have experience fitting panels then it wont be a problem, but in saying that some cars are different to others if I where you I would go with the new repo guards I am very happy with mine no rust straight and look great once fitted.

I bought a set last year on the recommendation of the body shop doing the work on my HK GTS Monaro rather than fix my original guards. They only had to do bit of work around the front of the RH guard (top of the 'eyebrow'). Technically they are not 100% accurate HK guards (which were slightly different to the HT/HG ones) but I can live with that. They have done many KTG Monaros.
