Interesting to see on some of the Bay type sites the price of I.D tags....Prolly the more popular models...I see A HZ GTS tags ...starting price $3,000 with 1 bid...WB DeVille...$300 zero bids...A HQ with a L31 for $999.00

So whats the go on this fellas?...

The rebirthers are alive and well,right ???

It isn't rebirthing unless you have the chassis rails to go with the tags. The identity of the vehicle is with the chassis number.

Yes of course its not until one actually rebirths,or tries to...

Ok ...Why would you, me or anyone pay $3 grand for a set of ID tags without the chassis rails?

As we all know it takes all kinds...

To hang around your neck in some pretend ford vs holden paint ball war games??

To mount in the den with arrows and flashing lights pointing to them??

To show some internet babe on their first date???

To be honest nothing wold surprise me.

It is I think because people think if they put them on a car it becomes worth more and make a profit. In most cases they have no idea what they are doing, they advertise on the 'web where the ID can be scrutinised and it becomes apparent that the car is a fraud. Sometimes people get conned but unfortunately that is a buyer beware situation.
Paying for tags is stupid, we all know it. But people can't help themselves sometimes.

The proliferation of information available on the net has slowed them down, but there's still a lot of people out there who would get stung by knowing enough info to be dangerous (say "XX7 means it's a Sandman" and simply buy a vehicle off that knowledge, without checking if the actual vehicle matches what the tags say it is, and the tag matches the era of the chassis number.

It's been a few years now, but I was asked to verify a VH Group 3 a guy had bought. It had a VB ADR/Chassis tag on it, with the matching VB chassis number, poorly stamped, and in the wrong place - but somehow it had passed through the system and was registered with that chassis number. The shell, wiring & other parts were all clearly VH. He had no idea until I broke the news. "But it had XV2 on the tag and that means SS" was his defence - information gleaned from the internet.

Not even the 1979 build date on the ADR tag (total mis-match for the '83 build date on the correspondence tag) tipped him off because he was blinded by a bargain price, and the fact he'd self-verified it.

Sad stories like this must be all too common. I'm surprised that you can buy and sell tags legally. can you?? I saw a guy selling blank tags on ebay last year that anyone could just stamp as they saw fit! He even provided suggestions for desirable model codes. I think from memory they were suited to a torana. I did report the attempted sale to ebay. Don't know what became of it though.

Not everyone has built up the info on these cars although many keyboard warriors act like they have. Many many people I bump still believe I'd plates can't be ID,d as belonging to a specific car.
They believe they can buy plates. Whack them on and reap the rewards of a $30,000 value jump. Sad thing is someone will eventually buy the car.

^^True. Problem is all it takes is a pissed off buyer, Police get involved etc and suddenly their profit is gone.

True HK...Its happened...I seem to remember a HO XY ending in court when the buyer found out the chassis number had beed altered .

Sad part is the scavengers are the only ones that win...Al la the lawers.

Yeah that's true. But so many cars out there would have dodgy plates on them. If one was successful in suing the previous owner. That would open the flood gates I think.

There was a case a few years ago where a couple was sued for selling a fake XW GT, the chassis number from a genuine GT was welded into another shell and the tags swapped over.

Just a few months ago, on a Facebook page a person was selling the chassis number and tags off a Sandman panel van. He was boasting that he had papers to confirm it was all legal to sell and reuse. After a bit of bargy, he produced the so called papers and others including me could see it wasn't a legit document. I've since found out he is very serious trouble with the law for doing that and to other cars.

Also on some FB groups, there is a few trying to sell the tags etc. They don't really like it when i point out its illegal to do so and is classed as car rebirthing.
