What you have is a fairly obscure combinations of options on a HX Kingswood ute.

It is a HX Kingswood ute originally painted Absinth Yellow (1886) with Tan trim (67V), optioned with 308 (L31) Turbo-Hydramatic auto (M41) and an LSD 3.08:1 rear axle.

It was a column shift auto with bench seat.

Plus it is an XU4 10cwt package (passenger tyres).

I've never yet recorded another L31, M41, bench seat Kingswood XU4 ute. I have one XU4, L31, M41, HZ Kingswood van but it had bucket seats.

I have an original engine number recorded for this car if you don't have it already.

still is column shift with 308 and t400 but has gts steering wheel and mirrors. So it would of had std steering wheel and std wheels with passenger tyres.

Original engine number was QT804251.

XU4 is just an option package. All it did was delete the load rated tyres and add passenger tyres, so that the carrying capacity of the ute dropped from 15.5cwt to 10cwt. A cwt is just about spot on 50kg. The purpose of the XU4 package was to lower the vehicle's carrying capacity so that rego was cheaper as in some States it was cheaper to register a vehicle with a load capacity of 500kg or less, and adding the passenger tyres was the way GMH did it. On a V8 HX ute the GVW reduced from 2200kg to 1860kg, and it'll have a different tyre placard (9942991 as it didn't have A/C, an A/C XU4 V8 HX ute had 9942992). The original tyres will most likely have been QRQ or QEV tyres:

QRQ - 185SR14 radial blackwall tubeless load rated.
QEV - ER70H14 radial blackwall tubeless.

When XU4 was released GMH also released a second Sandman option package that did exactly the same thing, ie add passenger vehicle tyres to the Sandman package so like normal ute/van and XU4 ute/van there was a load rated Sandman and a reduced load Sandman package.

GTS wheel and mirrors have been added later. Originally it would look exactly like any normal HX Kingswood ute from the outside and inside with the only noticeable difference being the 5.0L badge on the tailgate and the passenger vehicle tyres. It may have been optioned with Rally rims, you'd never know unless the broadcast sheet is left in the car somewhere, so if you are restoring it to as-original i'd fit a set of those, maybe even 15" Pontiac ones as 15" tyres are easier to get. You could also fit a HX U17 dash, it'll be the same instruments as a GTS or Sandman from the same timeframe and uses the same black fascia as a Sandman. You just fit the column shift indicator into the fascia.

Unless it had GTS wheels, it would have the standard Belmont, Kingswood, commercial type hubcaps. These have the long-tail Lion in the centre & are predominately stainless bright finish, with the Lion painted black & a thin rim black band near the outer edge. Similar to HQ hubcaps, but with the later Lion & far less black paint.

If it came with GTS rims (possible but unlikely) it would have the small centre cap, again with the later long tail Lion.

My HX 5.0L van was Nov 1976 Brisbane build with engine number 8200 higher than this one that was built in Dec 76.

In those days GM-H was building 12,000 -15,000 cars per month, spread over 4 factories. Engines were all built in the same engine plant at Fisherman's Bend (Vic) & numbered sequentially.

If engines were built, pallet stacked & stored for use at each assembly plant it would be easy for engine to be several thousand out of sequence.

Think about storing engines. I don't know how many are on each pallet, but let's say a 2 truck loads of engines arrive at Brisbane & they get stored in a shed until required. The last one in (probably the highest number) would be the first one used. The first one into the shed would be the last one used, unless another shipment was stacked in front of it. If this happens in a random fashion at the engine plant & then at each assembly plant, you can see how the number sequence could get so far out.

Could also be one is auto and the other manual, you often see discrepancies with numbers due to this. Or one of the cars could have been delayed on the assembly line or the engine fail on the rollers as the car leaves the assembly line, meaning another engine is fitted. Or even in some odd cases the dealer swaps engines between cars before the paperwork goes back to GMH detailing the engine number in the car. Normally it is just due to the random nature of the way it happened as Dr Terry states.
