Is anyone able to confirm for me the number of teeth on a GREEN Trimatic speedo drive gear? Every other colour is mentioned often however green seems to be the lost child of speedo gears. I have found only one reference anywhere. This was a forum comment saying it is 9 teeth. I don't want to pull the extension housing off this freshly painted box if I can.

7 is red
8 is white
9 is blue
10 is yellow

What is the box's code? That may help track it down as it may be an obscure application like Gemini or Toyota.

It is just an ordinary V8 Trimatic, electric kickdown, left side shifter. I believe it was in a VB 253 Commodore.

Are you sure it isn't a discoloured yellow? I don't think there would be a need for any other number of teeth on Trimatic drive gears other than 7, 8, 9 or 10? Yellow (10 teeth) is the VH, VK and VL 5.0L gear. The blue and white gears are the originals dating back to HT, and the 10 tooth yellow was added for 2.6 rear axle with the 7 tooth red added for 4cyl applications. So if there is a 6 or 11 tooth gear which is all green could be it must be for something shorter in the back end than a 3.9:1 rear axle with 13" tyres (4cyl) or longer than 2.6:1 with taller tyres.

Just a suggestion - how about popping in a driven gear with a known number of teeth, winding the tail shaft over until you get a known number of turns of the driven gear say, 10 turns without the speedo cable, and calculating the ratio? From there you will get the number of teeth on the drive gear.

That would work definitely. If I can't get a definitive answer I will either remove the extension housing. The box is not in the car. Or just mark one tooth with a texta and then turn the output shaft slowly counting the teeth as we go. The only reference I have found has been on the AussieV8 forum and it is claimed to be 9 teeth..
