Looking for some feedback on re drill blocks to change from Tri pattern to Turbo or vice versa, I have a very late black motor (88) trimatic pattern and wanted to put it in my 37 Dodge pickup currently running a 253 with Supra 5 speed, now i know the easy thing to do would to just swap the motor and leave the 5 speed but the cab is quite small and with a passenger its quite tight changing gears and I have a turbo 400 sitting on the floor as well so I just hoped to use both at my disposal. Their is a guy at Londonderry NSW (Near Penrith) that advertises on ebay says he has been drilling blocks for something like over 40 years so Im thinking must be a lot out there anyway seems a better option and cheaper than the adaptor kits available, other question is their anyway to modify the turbo 400 instead ?

See the dude in West Sydney you mention that does block re-drilling for $275. Far better solution than welding up the TH400.This way you can upgrade to a 4L60 or 4L60E later if you want overdrive.
That or use a later Trimatic like a VK or VL box, would also be fine for your application and you don't have to redrill the block. |

Thanks i didn't actually realise the 4L60 & 4L60e were compatible with the Aussie pattern so that may change my plans Edited by user Monday, 3 April 2017 8:50:27 PM(UTC)

The 4L60/E is turbo/Chev pattern, not Aussie, but the output shaft runs the same size slip yoke as the Trimatic/Aussie 4 speed & T350.
If you have the TH400 sitting there, and it's a known good box, I'd be getting the block drilled, or finding a turbo pattern block. For the cost of the drilling, you'd only pick up a 2nd hand trimatic or T700R4/4L60 with no guarantee of how long it will last before needing a rebuild. |
Cheers,

Turbo 400 i replaced with a Turbo 700 in my Chev pick up and the 400 was fine changed smoothly etc just decided to go with a overdrive , another reason I want to use the Turbo 400 as I really want to use a Lokar Shifter and I imagine you could probably modify one to fit a trimatic but seems a more sensible to use the motor and box I have other than leave the 5 speed in, cheers
