That range was an educated guess, but sometimes the cars don't fit with others or the engine may not be original one fitted in the Dandenong assembly plant. For this reason I'd do the AOMC search as I suggested in the PM so you can ensure that engine was first registered with that chassis number and if it's not the AOMC records will tell you the car it came from (assuming of course its first rego was in Victoria). The BODY number off the body ID plate and the PSN will help in nailing the car better too.

Not being a 327 may affect the chassis number timing vs build date. Remember they ran out of 327's and had vehicles (as in completed bodies) waiting for them and vehicles waiting to be built for them.

Sure was a good christmas present, my cars original owners brother got himself one at the same time. First saw both of them in a farm shed in 1972 and thought I wouldn't mind one of them. In the late 90s one of them was in my shed.

Brake booster should be a VH305 for your car.
Your subframe will have what looks like a battery tray area at the front of the drivers side wheel well, it wasnt for a battery tray though.
Search the forum theres loads of info on subframes here.

RigPig. using that code would dot under the A of safety and dot over the L indicate 2nd 1/4, April, May or June of 1968
Those numbers are on a 1/4 vent window on a HK Monaro from Canberra. Early Sept. build I believe. All the other side glass is dot over the L and dot under the F.
Given that the 1/4 vent glass is the same across the HK-T-G series 2 and 4 door there probably was a big demand for a part like that
that was needed for all models.

Hey Ron, I forgot to mention you should check inside your steering column.
Your car was 273 cars before mine on the line and the same guy may have slipped a brodacast sheet in there 49-years ago.
Its worth a look.

Wayne, chassis numbers on HK-HG don't dictate the order they were on the assembly line. With 273 numbers apart they could be consecutive cars or be a week or more apart if a car was delayed after the car left the body plant. I agree it is worth checking though, the same dude may have done the same trick on many cars.

The model code and other build information was written on the bare metal firewall in texta and the xylene from the texta survives etch prime, red oxide and body colour painting and baking. It can often be seen after the paint is stripped, although sandblasting may have removed it. The build date may also be there.
You may find a light date stamp on the axle tubes, but not always. The HK differential is different from HT and HG in several ways.
As Terry and Byron have said, the actual build date may differ by several weeks from the parts dates and the engine number will be the best indication of build date, as will the information from the body tags.

Hi Gm5735, I found a date code on my gearbox which says 8H14 and at the start but slightly lower is R. Can you tell me anything from that? Thanks.

I know this is about date codes but with my v8 hk's the out rigger on the front crossmember has a swab of paint on either side at the tip. I presume this was for id on the process line so a v8 crossmember could be installed when needed. the swabs are thick with brush marks as if they were almost tar. one side is grey and the other pink. has anyone else got these markings?

I havent seen one in pink before they're usually white.
I'd say they were check marks to indicate that all components on either side of the front crossmember assembly had been tightened and checked before installation.
Maybe two people worked on it that day and maybe the apprentice was given pink.
A date code was later stamped over the painted check mark on the passenger side and usually a crossmember part number stencilled on top between the engine mounts.
It then sat in a pile of other crossmembers ready to be installed.

I found one check mark on my diff inspection plate probably to indicate oil had been added.
I found a couple of others on the brake components and wheel rims, not many though.

My HJ Premier is covered with paint dots. I think Wayne is spot on to their purpose.

AFAIK V8 HK would have had the crossmember installed into the car and the engine in from above later in the process, whereas 6cyl would have had the crossmember with the driveline on it and the car dropped onto the assembly. The broadcast sheet would have a code on it so the correct crossmember was prepared ready to go at the appropriate time. Pagewood used a two digit code unique to the car so that the right parts went to the right car, not sure how other assembly plants did it.
