I have been offered a pair of small black buckled GM labelled seat belts dated 74 that were supposedly taken out of a XX7 HQ , I up until they were offered to me was under the impression they would have had the larger silver type metal buckle ones, a few HQ Sandman owners I know have the metal typed in there cars however I have been told the small black buckles were in fact 74 HQ issue out of Brisbane and maybe elsewhere?? I have a 74 late XX7 under resto the belts have been offered at a premium price fully restored but just wonder if they were a common install in Brisbane built Sandmans or perhaps just towards the end or was there a change over to HJ that the buckles changed from the larger metal type. I have a pair of restored metal ones and don't really want to fork out nearly a grand for the others if they are not necessarily 100% what should be in my van. My friend is adamant they are 100% correct for Brisbane Sandman

Afaik parts do not vary plant to plant as they all come from the same source. Timing of changes or when parts appear may change but parts themselves shouldn't.

Hi,

Are the '74 seatbelts that are black the stalk model. Remember having black ones in a late HQ statesman. Holden commercials had floppy belts until the 1/75 change. This was a bit of a mismatch to the large hole console installed in HQ Sandmans which were missing the little slots for the buckles at the rear of the unit.

No the seat belts are the floppy type with no stalks small buckles which are metal but have a rough grain plastic over the top , I have had them confirmed as 74 HQ Seat belts and another member on here send me some pics of a HQ Sandman ute old survivor he has it has two different types of belts the passenger side is the same as the one I have described. The belts offered were allegedly taken from a Sandman ute HQ , a friend of mine who is switched on with HQ claims they were a Brissy thing but Im not sure whether it was a end of line time thing or maybe if they ran out of the big buckles I dont know , the belts in question are nearly a 1k have new belts etc but the plastic on one buckle has started to chip away and without looking at them in person I'm wary they could keep chipping so will probably stick with my big buckles I have had restored.

Do they look anything like this black buckle for retractable front seatbelts?
I've never seen them not on a stalk.
I've had this car for 27 years and its a July 1974 so retractables must have been available then.

No retractables in commercials until 1/75. Retractables became standard in GTS at the same time that the console changed. That stalk one you posted Wayne looks like a WB or maybe HZ buckle. I'm sure my Father's WB van had those.

WB commercial stalks are not like those. They have a dark red push button that runs across the top of the buckle. Like a statesman but without the concertina style plastic cover on the stalk.

I don't believe the stalk with the orange button would be original for hq. The HJ commercial belt stalk had a very rectangular black head with a silver button (holden logo)

no offence we wreck 81837s only but just because you pulled them from a 40 year old car doesn't mean they're original.
I've got a hk brougham that's got an "original" 10 bolt diff that I've owned for over 30 years but i'll bet it didn't leave the factory with it.

I did post that link in the thread and yes they are the belts in question shame one of the buckles has part of the plastic missing my concern would be that the plastic continues to peel off and for that money its too big a risk as I have seen the same buckle with most of the plastic missing. It would appear from what I have managed to find out that it was only Brisbane that put them in some Sandmans why is anyones guess I have a restore pair of the more common metal buckle type which were more commonly used.
